Police arrest ‘stakeholders’

SHILLONG, Jan 6: The police today arrested “stakeholders” involved in a compromising formula to save the perpetrators in the Mawryngkneng gang rape case.

The police said today that though not directly involved in the gang rape case the two traditiol heads wanted to bring about a compromise between the alleged rapists and the victim.  

Police said that although the duo is not part of the group of rapists, but they are liable for abetment and a therefore heinous offence cannot be compounded. Superintendent of Police (City) Vivek Syiem said that some local stakeholders had wanted to bring about a compromise between the alleged rapists and the victim.

“It is a fact that certain local stakeholders facilitated that money would be exchanged between the rapists and the victim. But this was not acceptable to the victim’s family members,” Syiem said.

The two persons arrested by police included, the sordar of Mawryngkneng village, Peter J Lawai (34) and the Rangbah Dong of Mawmang locality Goldenstar Mukhim (38) and both were charged with abetment in the crime.

Meanwhile, the six accused persons involved in the case surrendered before a local court today.

“They were sent to judicial custody for 14 days by the court. But we would approach the court and ask for their police custody,” the SP City said.

Stating that the police were informed about the incident on the night of January 2, Syiem said the FIR was lodged on January 3 by one of the teachers from Mawryngkneng. He clarified that the police did not reject the FIR.

“The police did not reject the FIR but in fact the complaints were told to improve and add more details to it,” Syiem told media persons.
