Police crackdown on cannabis, contraband detained in Dhubri

DHUBRI: Huge quantity of cannabis was seized by police from a truck in Dhubri district on Sunday. Acting on an intelligence input regarding transportation of cannabis (ganja) in a truck bearing registration no. AS 17B 9934, the truck was detained by Agomoni Police Station of Dhubri district. When a search was done, 29 packets (310 kg) of cannabis were recovered which were concealed with other goods.

Driver of the truck and his associate, Hardeep Singh and Parvindar Singh respectively, were arrested. In an initial investigation, it was learnt that truck was coming from Agartala, said a police source in Agomoni. In another drive by police, 175 bottles of contraband cough syrup (ESkuf DX) and four contraband tablets named R7 were recovered and seized as a result of raids conducted at Chagolia Bazar and Agomoni Bazar by staff of Agomoni Police Station and Chagolia Outpost.

Two persons allegedly involved in the illegal trade - Mojidul Ahmed and Mohibul Islam of Chaholia part II - were apprehended and legal procedures were being drawn against them.

Talking to The Sentinel, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Head Quarter), Trinayan Bhuyan informed that based on ‘source information’ of the officer-in-charge of Dhubri Police Station (Sadar), a raid was conducted in the house of one Rajesh Sah of Nuniapatty area of Dhubri town and he was apprehended red-handed for allegedly doing cricket betting during the World Cup match between India-Pakistan on Sunday.

“We recovered Rs.22,730 and some documents related to game and betting and a mobile phone. We are also drawing legal procedures against Rajesh Sah,” Bhuyan further informed.
