Police still clueless on twin murders

SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

SILCHAR, April 11: Even after 24 hours of the sensatiol twin murders of mother and son at their residence at 2nd Link Road of this town in the night of Saturday, the police remain clueless. It is yet to reach any definite conclusion about the motive of the assailants. The discovery of the lifeless bodies of mother and son identified as Shila Deb Kanungo (75) and Soumitra Deb Kanungo (52) in the late morning of Sunday by their maid servant sent the neighbours in a state of shock and dismay.

The maid servant who found the main gate and the door open did not suspect anything foul until she saw the bodies lying in a pool of blood on the floor of a room. She raised an alarm and the people of the area came rushing and then the nearest Rangirkhari out post was informed. Moloy Kumar Acharjee, in-charge of the outpost, Sudhangshu Kumar Das, DSP, and Sachindra Sarma, OC of Sadar Tha, with a big posse of CRPF and police came to the spot.

Joyshree Kar, daughter of Shila Deb Kanungo, and her husband, Dr. Dipankar Kar, after being informed of the tragedy, came to the 2nd Link Road residence. Both of them broke down on seeing the bodies. They were also clueless about anyone to be involved in such ghastly murders. As Joyshree Kar said, “We know my mother and brother have no enmity with anyone in the locality or anywhere on this earth.” This was also the reaction of Dr. Dipankar Kar who is the head, department of English, Gurucharan College.

Even the pressing of a sniffer dog from Hailakandi could not find out any trace or link. But, according to a police official, there are indications of attempts to strangulate. Shila Deb Kanungo’s right eye showed clot. Soumitra Deb Kanungo was bleeding from mouth and nose. He also bore mark of injury on his right hand. There was no indication of any dacoity or theft because everything in the house was intact. The dead bodies were taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital in the presence of Prero Sharma, IAS, Magistrate, for postmortem.

At the request of Dr. Dipankar Kar and Joyshree Kar, the bodies were later on handed over to them in the late evening for performing last rites. Rajveer Singh, SP, assured Dr. Dipankar Kar that all possible angles would be explored and examined to find out the motive behind the gruesome murders. He was definite that some person or persons are behind the crime. Everything will be clear after the investigation underway is over. The police will get the postmortem report which according to investigation officer, Moloy Kumar Acharjee, provide vital clue.

It is relevant to recall that about 3 years back, it was in 1st Link Road that husband and wife were found murdered in their house. The neighbours upset by the bad smell coming out of their house from the decomposition of bodies informed the police. It was only after three days that the police of Rangirkhari outpost came and entered inside after breaking open the door. This twin murders too remained unresolved till date.

Moloy Kumar Acharjee has not ruled out the background of Soumitra Deb Kanungo who besides being a drug addict and a CBI inquiry is going on against him for his being involved in a scandal centering round the commissioned programme of Silchar Doordarshan Kendra. He has sought the cooperation of people in general to come forward with any kind of information that will held the police to crack the case.
