Policing with 2,724 personnel less than asking strength

 Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 2: Policing in Assam is a tough job with the State Government making do with a force that falls far short of having its asking strength. Now as many as 2,724 posts are lying vacant in various police stations, police outposts, watch posts, border police outposts, fixed pickets, patrol posts etc., in the State.
This fact came to light from the revelations made by State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary on the floor of the State Assembly on Monday while replying, on behalf of Home Minister Sarbanda Sonowal, to a question from Congress MLA Sukur Ali Ahmed.
Patowary said: “Assam has 343 police stations, 289 police outposts, 120 watch posts, 136 patrol posts, 82 border police outposts and 140 fixed pickets. The total number of sanctioned posts against all these is 12,782. However, we have 10,058 personnel. As many as 2,724 posts have been lying vacant.”
Replying to another question from AGP MLA Gunindra th Das, Patowary said: “From 1990-2016 as many as 931 police/army/paramilitary personnel were killed by militants in the State. Among the 931 personnel, 480 are Assam Police personnel. From 2016-March 2018 seven police/army/paramilitary personnel were killed in the State, and five of them are Assam Police personnel.”
