Politician-official nexus cripples welfare schemes

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT

SILCHAR, Sept 1: Various schemes meant for the welfare of people are provided under the department of social welfare. Any eligible person can avail himself of the benefits of schemes by filling and submitting a specified form. But shockingly, though there are specific guidelines to distribute forms among the target people belonging to weaker sections of the society, the Congress MLAs in collusion with the department officials are making the forms available only to their political supporters. As a result, many genuine applicants are deprived of their legitimate claims. This was among the 3 allegations made by All India United Democratic Youth Front (AIUDYF), Cachar central committee, in a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister of Assam and submitted through the Deputy Commissioner of the district today.

AIUDYF also alleged that the same syndicate of politicians and officials of the department of agriculture are involved in the allotment of onetime relief package to the farmers only owing allegiance to Congress. Hundreds of farmers are denied the benefits due to them. The members also pinpointed the network of roads across the district in a deplorable condition maintained by the state PWD (R). The roads have not been repaired and maintained for a long time despite public agitation and memoranda to the authorities concerned, it has been stated in the memorandum.

The people who have to use the roads everyday face immense hardships and are the worst sufferers, it is further pointed out. During monsoon and heavy rains the conditions of the road communication become so bad that it is difficult to walk and move. The vehicular traffic while negotiating the potholes and craters get stuck up in slush and mud. In fact, if the conditions continue like that, the roads will turn into a death-trap.

The members of the Youth Front have impressed upon the Chief Minister to take serious note of the issues raised and ensure that the roads are repaired and improved before the Puja and Eid. He has also been impressed upon to exert his good offices so that the social welfare and agriculture departments implement the schemes meant for common people strictly in adherence to the guidelines of the state government.
