Poll campaign gains momentum in Barak Valley

SILCHAR, March 26: As the assembly election is approaching, the campaign for the forthcoming Assembly elections has gained momentum in Barak Valley. With a few days left for the polls, the political parties have resorted to varied campaign methods. Parties are leaving no stone unturned in reaching out to the general people. Every day there is press-meet, rally and campaign. Loud speaker mounted on auto-rickshaws is the most common mode of campaign.

 The microphones blare out popular Hindi songs with variations in its origil lyrics. The lyrical songs are virtually a praise of the candidates who promise to turn things around for better. Every now and then auto-rickshaws pass by the lanes of the towns and villages. Hoardings and banners on the back of vehicles campaign for the candidates and make appeal for voting them. Of late, religious hymns and folk songs have also added colour to the propaganda mill. As the poll is coming near, star campaigners, tiol and state level leaders of political parties have begun to frequent the valley.  Printed manifestos, leaflets and handouts are being circulated from house to house. Posters and banners with candidate’s photographs and party symbols are being pasted on the walls. Even, social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp have joined the campaign. Users are regularly posting and uploading their preferred candidate’s photographs and texts to gain support for them. Candidates can be seen on foot, campaigning for their respective parties with their manifestos. The campaigns are gradually gearing up to add heat and dust to the poll firmament.
