Polling concludes peacefully in Lakhimpur with 65.01 per cent voter turnout

LAKHIMPUR: The polling process in Lakhimpur HPC held on Thursday along with four other HPCs of the State as part of the first phase poll of the 17th parliamentary election, concluded peacefully. No untoward incident or poll-related violence was reported from any place under the constituency.

Returning Officer of the HPC-cum-Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur, Dr Jeevan B said, “The electors under the HPC covering the nine LAC fragments- Naoboicha, Lakhimpur Dhakuakhana, Dhemaji, Jonai, Majuli, Chabua, Doomdooma and Sadiya -cast their franchise freely and fairly enhancing the very spirit of Indian democracy. The overall environment was peaceful.” However, starting of polling was delayed in some polling stations under Dhemaji and Lakhimpur election district due to technical defect in the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM).

The candidates in the contest from the HPC are sitting MP Pradan Baruah of BJP-AGP-SGS-BPF alliance, Anil Borgohain of Indian National Congress, Anup Pratim Baruah of Nationalist Congress Party, Amiya Kumar Hundique of Communist Party of India (Marxist), Arup Kalita of Communist Party of India, Ubaidur Rahman Kasimi of Asom Jana Marcha, Dilip Moran of Asom Dristi Party, Hem Kanta Miri of SUCI (Communist), and independent candidates Ambaz Uddin and Prabhu Lal Vaishnava.

A total of 11,09,613 electors out of 17,04,447, covering the nine LACs under the HPC till 5 pm cast their franchise in order to decide the destiny of those eleven candidates in fray. The overall turnout was 65.01 per cent till 5 pm accounting for Majuli-64.28 per cent, Lakhimpur LAC- 48.60 per cent, Dhakuakhana LAC 71.14 per cent, Naoboicha LAC-62 per cent, Dhemaji LAC-62.66 per cent, Jonai LAC-71 per cent, Chabua LAC-71 per cent, Doomdooma LAC-65.20 per cent and Sadiya 65.20 per cent.
