Prafulla Kumar Mahanta Holds Tarun Gogoi Responsible For Killings Assam Agitation Martyrs

GUWAHATI: In his retaliatory attack, former Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta has held his predecessor Tarun Gogoi responsible for over 860 people martyred during the Assam Agitation. On Monday, Gogoi held Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and the AASU responsible for the killing of over 860 people during the Assam Agitation.

Talking to the media on Tuesday, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said: “It was not the AASU, but the Congress party was responsible for the killings. At that time Late Hiteswar Saikia was the chief minister of Assam and Tarun Gogoi was a Union minister. They are responsible for those killings. And the Assam Agitation was for a genuine cause – deportation of foreigners from the State.”

On the cut-off date for deportation of foreigners from the State as mentioned in the Accord, Mahanta said: “The cut-off date – midnight of March 24, 1971 – of the Assam Accord was taken with discussion with all. I was not alone while signing the Assam Accord. There were other AASU leaders and All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad leaders as well. It was a consensual decision. After signing the Assam Accord, all parties and organizations of Assam accepted the cut-off date. It was endorsed by all.”
