Preparedness against natural calamities in Dhubri

DHUBRI, May 12: In view of flood and other natural calamities, Dhubri district Disaster Management Agency is taking effective steps for preparedness with assistance from the Army 17 Dogra Regiment based in Panbari of Dhubri district.

As part of the preparedness, a mock-drill was organized on Saturday by the army at Golokganj in front of VDP office where nearly 70 rescue team members, including medical unit of army, participated in the drill and shown various ways to save people trapped in critical condition in major natural calamities like flood, earthquake and storm. The mock-drill was conducted by Commandant of 17 Dogra Regiment, Col. Devraj Gill where Dhubri Additional Deputy Commissioner Pallab Mazumdar along with a host of staff from District Disaster Management Agency and other departments, including officials and staff of PWD, Health, Veterinary, Food and Civil Supply, Police, Social Welfare, Publicity Department and Public Health Engineering (PHE) departments were present.

Earlier, a meeting was organized by District Disaster Management Agency at Dhubri DC conference hall on Friday wherein commandant of 17 Dogra Regiment, Col. Devraj Gill elaborately explained the dos and don’ts during natural calamities with the help of power-point presentation, said Dhubri District Information and Public Relation Officer, Bikash Sarma.

When contacted, Dhubri Additional Deputy Commissioner, Pallab Mazumdar informed The Sentinel that the mock-drill programme was lively with educative values and ground realities to create practical awareness among the people living in the disaster-prone area of the district. “A large number of local people of Golokganj town and villagers around the area gathered in the field to see the mock-drill. During the mock-drill, a live demonstration was enacted to rescue a person from drowning in the river. Besides these, army team also taught people as how to make life-saving materials quickly at home,” Mazumdar added.
