Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Inaugurate the First Airport in Sikkim

The first airport in Sikkim, the Pakyong airport is scheduled to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi. The Prime Minister is to inaugurate the airport on September 23and will later address a public meeting at Pakyong.

Notably, the Pakyong town is just around 30km from Gangtok and this is going to be the first ever airport in the state. With the inauguration of this new airport, communication will be in a much better state for the tourist destination which welcomes thousands of visitors coming from in and outside the country every year. Now with the initiation of the flight services to such a nearby location of the state capital, the numbers of tourists are expected to increase.

After the inauguration and the public meeting, the PM will head back to the national capital ion the same day. Rendering more information on the inauguration event, the Sikkim chief secretary A K Shrivastava said that the PMO and the Union civil aviation ministry have intimated the state government about the inauguration plan. But before that, the civil aviation secretary R N Choubey will be in Sikkim on Thursday to oversee the preparations for the visit. The commercial operations of the airport will commence from October first week and the first flight to land on the grounds of the north-eastern state will fly from Calcutta.
