Priyanka Gandhi appointed GS in-charge of East Uttar Pradesh

Guwahati: Priyanka Gandhi has been appointed as the Congress General Secretary in charge of East Uttar Pradesh ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

The daughter of Gandhi family has taken up the first ever official party assignment after she has been appointed as the Congress General Secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh. She will look after the party affairs in the eastern part of the country which are politically important state while senior leader Jyotiraditya Scindia has been elevated as the general secretary in-charge of west Uttar Pradesh.

Till she has been appointed as the general secretary in-charge of east Uttar Pradesh, she was looking after the election management at Rae Bareli and Amethi, the two Lok Sabha constituencies represented by her mother Sonia Gandhi and brother Rahul Gandhi respectively.

Priyanka was also associated in the discussions of the Chief Ministers of the three states Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The discussion was led by Congress President Rahul Gandhi.

Although Congress leaders, workers and supporters have demanded for her active role in politics, she kept away confining herself to the campaign management in the constituencies of Rae Bareli and Amethi.

The announcement comes months ahead of the Lok Sabha elections and underlines the significance of Uttar Pradesh that sends 80 members to the 543-member Lok Sabha and holds the key to forming any government at the Centre.

As stated in a press release, Priyanka Gandhi will take charge in the first week of February. The announcement came on the day Rahul Gandhi began his two-day visit to his Lok Sabha constituency Amethi.

KC Venugopal has been appointed as the party general secretary in-charge of the organization by the Congress President who will look after the party affairs in Karnataka.

Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, who has been divested of the charge of Uttar Pradesh, will be the Congress general secretary in-charge of Haryana.

Scindia, who represents Guna in the Lok Sabha, will continue to be the party’s chief whip in the Lower House.
