Priyanka Gandhi speaks why she backs out to contest from Varanasi

Guwahati: Congress General Secretary in-charge of East Uttar Pradesh Priyanka Gandhi has opened her mouth as to why she is not contesting the national election from Varanasi against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Earlier, the Congress was about to field Priyanka Gandhi from Varanasi but later they decided to field Ajay Rai from the constituency against the Prime Minister.

Priyanka Gandhi asserted that she did not pull out of Varanasi who was campaigning at Amethi in Uttar Pradesh for her brother and Congress President Rahul Gandhi.

Talking about not contesting from Varanasi, Priyanka Gandhi said, “I took the advice of all senior leaders of our party and colleagues in Uttar Pradesh. They firmly felt that I have the responsibility here of looking after 41 seats and all the candidates expected me to campaign in their constituency. I felt that they would be disappointed if I focused on only one place.”

She further denied that the move sent out any wrong signal.

Priyanka joined the Congress in January as the general secretary in-charge of east Uttar Pradesh.

She also stated that from the start she had been said that she would do what her party says. She said, “My party decided this so I am going with that.”

Last week, union minister Arun Jaitley said that Priyanka has rejoiced in giving daily bytes to the media that she was ready to take on the Prime Minister. Jaitley in a blog post said that Priyanka’s brother and Congress President Rahul Gandhi claimed that the party was building up the suspense for an eventual thriller and that she had obviously chickened out of the contest.

Jaitley has commented hours after the Congress announced Ajay Rai as its candidate from Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency.

In his blog post, Jaitley further said that he was deeply disappointed with the Congress party’s decision of not fielding Priyanka from Varanasi. The last two months that she has been in public life has driven home the point. He said that India has changed, dynasties don’t matter.
