Probe into Gauri Lankesh's murder demanded

Goalpara, Sept 14: The jourlist fraternity under the banner of Goalpara District Jourlists’ Association (GDJA), on Thursday staged a sit-in outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner against the recent murder of Bengaluru based jourlist Gauri Lankesh. The members of the association sat for an hour. During the protest, festoons and banners despising the law agencies which always fail to protect the lives and properties of the media persons were displayed.

 Later, in a memorandum addressed to the Union Home Minister, the GDJA stated that it expressed solidarity with other similar associations across the tion which had registered protest against the dastardly killing of Gauri Lankesh who spoke against discrimition and violence. On behalf of GDJA, president Abdus Samad Sarkar and secretary Rasidul Hussain signed the memorandum. The GDJA termed this as an attack on freedom of speech and an attempt to throttle the voices of those who believe in democracy. Calling the murder of this senior jourlist as inhumane, the association demanded a high-level inquiry, arrest of those involved and emphasized upon the process of investigation be fast tracked. On Thursday, several other organizations like AASU, SMSS, AAMSU and DYFI also supported the agitation and participated in the protest.
