Protest against assault on jourlist

Bongaigaon, February 20:  A three-hour demonstration was staged today by All Assam Press Correspondent Union (AAPCU) in front of the DC office here protesting against the alleged assault on a jourlist. They demanded punishment for the CRPF jawan who assaulted a jourlist on February 9 last, during the municipal elections. They also demanded security for the jourlists.

 “On February 9 last, a jourlist of Bongaigaon, Sujit Kumar Ray, was assaulted by two CRPF jawans, when he was covering a news. An FIR had been already while several organizations have also submitted memorandum to the deputy commissioner demanding punishment to the culprit. But, we have not seen any action yet. We demand immediate inquiry into the case and punishment of the culprits, besides security for jourlists,” Ranjit Sarma, a senior jourlist of Bongaigaon said.

Several leaders including Akhil Gogoi from KMSS, Biswajit Ray from AKRSU(B), Traloikya Ray (AKRSU-H) and members from All Koch-Rajbanshi Students Union (AKRSU), All Assam Students Union (AASU), All Adivasi Students Association (AASA), Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), Gorkha Students Union (GSU) and Jourlist Union of Assam (JUA) also participated in the demonstration.
