Protest against distillery plant, police resort to blank firing

Boko, March 10:  M/S Brahmaputra Biochemical Pvt. Ltd. is being set up to produce 60,000 litres of alcohol per day with 2MW captive power plant and also a bottling plant of country liquor for 6,000 cases per day. The industry is on red category among 17 categories of major polluting industries in the country. The plant is to produce grain-based distillery (alcohol) 60,000 liters per day which will require 6.4 lakh liters of ground fresh water per day. If such large quantity of fresh water is allowed to be lifted from the ground every day, the ground water level will go down by about 70 feet. As a result, people of the surrounding area will face water scarcity and the area will become dry. Due to this, villagers from Jambari protested against this company. During the protest, police resorted to blank firing to control the protesters. Filly, they submitted a memorandum to the ADC Pulak Mahanta.
