FROM A CORRESPONDENT

SHILLONG, Jan 18: The Congress party members in the state today gheraoed the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) office in the city even as it submitted a memorandum to the regiol office.

“The Centre has ruined the autonomy of not only the RBI, but of other institutions too,” Congress leader and former forest minister of Assam Rockybul Hussain said.

According to Hussain, the main demand in the memorandum is the immediate right to withdraw money without any restrictions. The Congress party also wants the restoration of RBI’s autonomy as India’s fincial regulator.

Hussain also said post demonetisation the hard earned money saved by housewives suddenly became black money.

Meanwhile, former MP from Aruchal Pradesh Takam Sanjoy said when the Congress was in power in the Centre it took measures to curb corruption.

Sanjoy pointed out that the Congress had handed over cases like the 2G scam and coal gate scam to the CBI.

He said the autonomy of the RBI has been infringed upon when the Prime Minister rendra Modi announced the demonetisation process instead of the RBI Governor.

“The terrorist activities had not scaled down post demonetization,” Sanjoy said, adding, “we will have to fight back since the Prime Minister is by passing the democratic means.”
