Protest against out of order water scheme, Goalpara

GOALPARA: Hundreds of people on Monday morning came out of their houses with a symbolic empty jar at Borpothar under Rongjuli development block of Goalpara district in Lower Assam, demanding that the only available water supply scheme of the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department should be made functional.

The Borpothar village has a water supply scheme by the PHE department but is not functional since the last one year. “When the scheme was started two years back we were very happy to receive pure water but within few months it stopped working. We are again using water from ponds and one or two hand tube wells available in the village,” said an elderly woman of the village.

The non-functional scheme has created another problem in the village - most of the people are suffering from water-borne diseases. “Our children and elders suffer from various water-borne diseases like typhoid and dysentery. But what to do, we cannot afford to purchase water from the market since our economic condition is not so good,” said some villagers.

Nasimul Islam, the newly-joined executive engineer, assured to continue the scheme once the technical problem of continuation of diesel supply was solved. “The scheme is operated by the diesel generated set and at present the supply of the same has been discontinued for various reasons. Once we receive the fuel it will again be functional again,” he said. He also appealed to the users of the scheme to collect Rs 1,500 to Rs 1,800 per month to meet the fuel cost till the government supply was available.
