Protests continue in Udalguri

TANGLA, Aug 2: Protesting against the brutal killing of ABMSU president Lafiqul Islam and demanding CBI investigation, ABMSU supporters staged two-hour highway blockade programme at NH-15 in Lalpool near Rowta in Udalguri on Wednesday. Though no bandh was called by any organization, most of the places in Udalguri district like Kalaigaon, Udalguri, Tangla and Rowta wore a deserted look with minority-domited areas witnessing protests. In places like Dimakuchi, Garuajhar, Kalaigaon and Orang, most of the business establishments had their shutters down on Wednesday. The broad daylight killing has created palpable tension among common people and insecurity has gripped the people. In the meantime, ruling BPF and various student organizations like AASU, ABSU and AKRSU have condemned the killing of the ABMSU leader and demanded impartial inquiry in it.

BTC EM Jagadish Sarkar also strongly condemned the killing of the ABMSU president. Udalguri district administration has taken up all precautiory measures to prevent breakdown of law and order in the district. As per information, Kuladhar Saikia, IGP (BTAD) has already arrived in the district to supervise security measures. The civil administration has held discussions with all political parties and leaders of student organizations of the district. Police and paramilitary troops were seen patrolling, especially in minority-domited areas. Police have been alerted to monitor the situation in sensitive areas. The Udalguri district administration has appealed people to maintain peace and commul harmony.
