Psychiatric nurses’ conference held in Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health

Tezpur: The 18th annual conference of Indian Society of Psychiatric Nurses was held at the Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health (LGBRIMH) premises.

A pre-conference workshop on ‘Rewriting our stories: Self-care in Nursing’ was scheduled on the first day of the conference. The inaugural programme was presided by Dr SK Deuri, Director, LGBRIMH.

Dr T Dileep Kumar, president of Indian Nursing Council, and Dr RK Kalita, Principal of Tezpur Medical College and Hospital, were the chief guest and guest of honour respectively. The dignitaries lit the ceremonial lamp during the inaugural programme. Dr. Arunjyoti Baruah, Head of the Department of Psychiatric Nursing, and the organizing chairperson, gave the welcome address followed by felicitation of guests.

Dr K Reddemma, president of ISPN, unfolded the theme of the conference ‘Role of Nurse in Promoting Positive Mental Health’. She released Standard of Psychiatric Nursing Practice which will be the benchmark for psychiatric nursing practice across the country. It will change the scenario of care giving by psychiatric nurses in the clinical environments. Dr. G. Radhakrishnan, general secretary of ISPN, presented the annual report of ISPN.

Dr T Dileep Kumar released the souvenir to commemorate the conference. Dr. RK Kalita released the ISPN Journal.

Dr SK Deuri released updates on the youth initiative ‘Yuva-Mann-Meet’. It is a volunteering-based approach led by the Department of Clinical Psychology, LGBRIMH, that aims to orient college youth for enhancing public awareness about mental health, fighting stigma and promoting positive mental health.

Lifetime achievement award, ISPN, was conferred to Dr K Reddemma, former Dean, Senior Professor and Head of the Department of Nursing, NIMHANS, for significant contribution in the field of psychiatric nursing.

Around 300 delegates from across the country attended the conference.
