Public meeting held  to oppose Citizenship (Amendment) Bill

GORESWAR, June 27: A public meeting was organized on the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill -2016, NRC and some other crucial issues related to constitutional safeguard of Assam’s State language by the Goreswar unit of Axam Xahitya Xabha at the Bishnu Rabha Bhavan at Goreswar in Baksa district on Wednesday. The public meeting was presided over by Satyanath Thakuriya, president of Goreswar Xahitya Xabha, and the purpose of the meeting was explained by Parameswar Deka, secretary of Goreswar Xahitya Xabha. Almost all socio-cultural, literary, student and youth organizations of Goreswar area took part in the meeting and described the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 as ‘anti-constitutional’ and added that the proposed Bill had also flouted the basic clauses of the Assam Accord. The leaders of the organizations discussed threadbare the pros and cons of the Bill laid stress on proper update of the National Register of Citizens (NRC). All the organizations signed a memorandum against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and submitted it to the Deputy Commissioner of Baksa through the Baksa district unit of Axam Xahitya Xabha.
