Rahul Gandhi pleads 'not guilty' before a Mumbai Court in RSS Defamation case hearing

Mumbai: Rahul Gandhi pleaded not guilty before a Mumbai court, in its Thursday hearing on a defamation case that was filed by an RSS worker. The defamation case was filed by an RSS worker for Rahul Gandhi’s derogatory comments linking the murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh. Gandhi had remarked that the killing of the journalist was done with "BJP-RSS ideology". This had created quite a row, however, Gandhi was granted bail on a surety of Rs. 15,000.

Coming out of the court after the hearing, the Congress leader said, "I am being attacked and I am enjoying the fight."

It was just a day before this, when Rahul Gandhi announced his official resignation from the Congress president position. Gandhi, upset with the poor result shown by his party in the recently concluded Lok Sabha election, has stepped down from the Congress chief’s position.

However, Thursday morning was a different day for the outgoing Congress president as he came out victorious from the court and was greeted by a huge crowd of Congress workers waving party flags.

Speaking to the media, Gandhi said, "It is a battle of ideology. I stand with the poor, the farmers. The attacks are on. Mazaa aa raha hai (I am enjoying the fight)."

He further added, "The fight will continue. I will fight 10 times harder than in the last five years."

Many took this decision by Rahul Gandhi to appear in the court on the defamation case as an ideological battle. Rahul had mentioned it in his open letter shared on Wednesday that, "I personally fought the Prime Minister, the RSS and the institutions they have captured with all my being. I fought because I love India... At times, I stood completely alone and am extremely proud of it."

The 49-year-old had added that he will not go for defeating his opponents without sacrificing the desire for power and this will be a deeper ideological battle.
