Special Correspondent

Silchar: It was a hot day for this town as the candidate of BJP, Dr Rajdeep Roy and Sushmita Dev of Congress, with show of strength proceeded from their respective party headquarters towards the office of the Returning Officer to file their nominations for the Lok Sabha seat of Silchar for 2019 election. Dr Rajdeep Roy was the first to submit his nomination papers to Laya Madduri, the Returning Officer. Along with him were Mahendra Singh, observer for Assam, Kabindra Purkayastha, former Union Minister, Parimal Suklabaidya, Pijush Hazarika, Minister of State for Health and Kaushik Rai, BJP district committee president.

After stepping out of the DC office, Dr Rajdeep Roy addressing the waiting mediapersons as well as his supporters, said, “Return of Narendra Modi as Prime Minister of the country is necessary to carry forward the surge of development. Northeast in particular has witnessed the development that remained elusive during the 60 year rule by Congress.” It was an impressive show of strength with leaders and workers of block, mandal and district levels in the cavalcade of Dr Rajdeep Roy who raised slogans intermittently shouting ‘Bharat Mata ki jai’, Narendra Modi jindabad’.

Sushmita Dev followed next with her huge number of workers and leaders from all levels. She went to file her nomination to the Returning Officer with her mother Bithika Dev, former MLA, Nandita Das, state Mahila Congress president, Pradip Kumar Dey, Silchar district Congress president, and Rumi Nath, former MLA among others. After submitting her nomination papers, Sushmita also spoke to the journalists and predicted the mandate of people for Congress to free the nation from Narendra Modi who has done nothing except to feed the common masses with false promises. Looking at the surging crowd of her party workers, she expressed her confidence she would repeat her performance of 2014.

Later BJP held public meeting at Town Club ground where leaders went hammer and tongue to hit out at Congress for its politics of convenience and expediency and its desperate attempt at ‘mahagathbandhan’ which they mocked as ‘mahathagbandhan’. If Congress and its allies again ride back to power, it will be rerun of scams and scandals, they said. They called upon the gathering to exercise their franchise with discreet and wisdom. Congress too followed suit by holding a meeting in the premises of Rajiv Bhavan where Sushmita Dev came down heavily on BJP by lobbing volley of questions about the oft- repeated charges against Modi Government of its promises for jobs, return of black money and deposit of Rs 3 lakh in one’s account and so on. Dilip Kumar, Independent, and SUCI nominee Shyam Deo Kurmi also filed their nominations today. Silchar goes to polls on April 18.
