Ramadan begins today

GUWAHATI, June 6: Along with rest of the world, the holy month of Ramadan is beginning in Assam as well tomorrow. The Hilal Committee of the State gave its confirmation to the Ramadan month today.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and a time when the Muslims the world over fast during the hours of daylight. It lasts for 29 to 30 days depending on the crescent moon.  The end of the Ramadan is marked by Id-ul-Fitr. The Muslims believe that the Holy Koran was first revealed to Prophet Muhammed during this month. Roja (fast) is one of the five pillars in Islamic faith.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal today extended warmest Ramadan greetings to the Muslims of the State as the month of fasting begins on Tuesday.

“It’s my warmest greetings to the Muslim brethren of the State for the holy month of Ramadan,” he said, adding, “Ramadan is a time for Muslims to observe dawn-to-dusk fast to cleanse the soul and come closer to Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.”

Former State Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and CLP leader and Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly Debabrata Saikia, State BJP Minority Morcha president Mominul Aowal and Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee president Shahz Yasmin Haque also greeted the people of the State belonging to Islamic faith on the occasion of Ramadan.
