Shillong, June 13: It’s almost certain that six-term Congress MLA from Ranikor constituency Martin M Danggo will resigned and re-contest from the same seat on the Nationalist People’s Party (NPP) ticket.
At a public meeting held at Ranikor on Tuesday, Danngo was witness to the unfurling of the NPP though he spoke highly about his association with the Congress.
However, when The Sentinel confronted him with queries about his tentative resignation and his association with the NPP, Danngo conceded by stating that he has to abide with the decision made by the people of his constituency.
“The Chief Minister has announced the creation of the Ranikor Block Sub-division and the day of the inauguration will also be the day of my resignation as a congress MLA,” stated the six times MLA who has held the post of Assembly speaker and Cabinet Minister during the Congress regime.
Stating that sacrifices have to make for the betterment of the people, Danngo said that he is aware of the many criticism against him. “My concern is to have a civil subdivision that has been guaranteed today”, he stated adding, “I could never make that demand to materialize even when I was in the Ministry.” Making it amply clear that he will resign from the Congress, join the NPP and seek re-election, the sitting MLA said that sacrifices has to be made for the betterment of the people.
The latest development has come as a shot in the arm to the Nationalist People’s Party and a blow to the Congress party.
However, the Congress reaction continue to be in denial. Senior Congress legislator Zenith Sangma hurriedly called a press conference to down play the developments. “Our MLAs are intact and we are functioning as a composite opposition party”, stated Sangma. When asked about Martin Danngo resignation, Sangma stated, “We don’t want to talk about the future tense.”
