Re-opening of defence area entry, exit gates hailed

SHILLONG, May 29: The residents of Shillong city have hailed the Union Minister of Defence Nirmala Sitharaman for re-opening the entry and exit gates under the defence areas.

“On behalf of all the people of Shillong city in particular and Meghalaya as a whole, we would like to thank you for considering our requests for re-opening all the entry and exits gates, which were closed a few years ago by the Defence authority for its use by the general public,” reads the letter sent to the Minister by president of 19 South Shillong BJP Mondal.

The move of re-opening the entry and exit gates was taken after a memorandum was submitted to the Union Defence Minister by local legislator Sanbor Shullai, during her visit to CERA office, Jhalupara in Shillong on February 15.

In the letter it also stated that all the people of 19 South Shillong Legislative Assembly Constituency, the Shillong Cantonment Area Development Committee and the residents of Shillong city and Meghalaya as a whole salutes you for this early and timely decision, which will ease the communication for the people living in the adjoining areas. “We are looking forward to meet you again soon to discuss matters concerning the civilians living within the Shillong Cantonment area,” stated the letter.
