Re-poll concludes peacefully in a polling station of Dhemaji

A CORRESPONDENT

LAKHIMPUR: Re-polling concluded peacefully in a polling station of Dhemaji Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC) under Lakhimpur HPC on Thursday. This polling station is No. 165 polling station at Nalanipam Town High School in Dhemaji district headquarter. The voter turnout in the re-poll was 69.09 per cent as per report from the Dhemaji District Election Officer.

Polling was held in the polling station on April 11 as part of the first phase poll of the parliamentary election. A technical defect in the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) affected the polling process. Defect in the EVM occurred after 158 electors had exercised their franchise in that polling station on that day. It was alleged that the defective EVM could not be replaced immediately due to the lackadaisical attitude of the polling personnel concerned despite the distance between the polling station and the Dhemaji Deputy Commissioner’s office being only 500 meters.

Following this anomaly, the Election Commission of India notified re-poll in the polling station on April 18, on the same day in which polling was held in five HPCs of the State as part of second phase polling of the parliamentary election. The total number of electors under the polling station is 800.
