Regional Parties must opt for a Common Candidate: Bindo M Lanong

SHILLONG: Senior leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP) Bindo M Lanong has expressed the need for all the regional parties to have the single goal of putting up a common candidate for the upcoming MP election in 2019 from Shillong constituency.

“What’s the point in fighting among ourselves (regional parties) to put up a common candidate in Shillong constituency? It will only pave the way for the Congress,” Lanong told The Sentinel.

He informed that the UDP is planning to discuss with other regional parties within the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government like the Hills State Peoples Democratic Alliance (HSPDP) and Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) on matters concerning the common candidate for the MP election from Shillong Constituency.

“If the National People’s Party (NPP) sets up a candidate from Shillong constituency and we (UDP) do the same, this will ultimately open the doors for the Congress,” he said.

He also said that if the NPP sets up a candidate in Shillong and the UDP sets up its candidate in Tura constituency it will not benefit any of us. Hence there is no need for both the parties who are within the coalition government to go against each other because it will divide the alliance.

“The MDA government is more important than an MP candidate. Hence if we get one UDP MP from Shillong and one NPP candidate from Tura, the coalition government will have two MPs in the Parliament in New Delhi,” he pointed out.

When asked, Lanong said, “If the PDF or the HSPDP has a better candidate to contest the MP election in 2019 we will have to take it up for discussion with them. However, the important thing is for all regional parties to hold a discussion on this matter.”

He informed that the UDP will hold a meeting on October 31, to further discussion on the MP election issue.
