Hailakandi: Repolling will take place at one polling station in Hailakandi district on Saturday. Returning Officer Adil Khan informed that as per direction from the Assam State Election Commission, fresh polls will take place at Polling Station 52 Shyampur ME Institute of Dariarghat-Karicherra Gaon Panchayat under 25/08 Gharmurah-Jamira ZPC on Saturday from 7 am to 3 pm.

Repolling has been ordered by the state election commission on the basis of reports filed by Returning Officer Khan and Election Observers Nirmal Kanti Debnath and Surajit Sonowal. Evidence of rigging was found by authorised officer and counting officials. “Ballot papers in folded bundles were detected by the authorised officer and counting supervisor. Even the seal of the ballot box was tempered with. Counting was immediately stopped and the matter was referred to SEC by Returning Officer and Election Observers, “ said an election official.

When counting was stopped following serious anomalies, AIUDF candidate Saleh Ahmed Mazumder was leading by 2,407 votes over his nearest BJP candidate Jiyant Wahan Reang. Of the 11 ZPCs, the AIUDF has so far won five seats, BJP four and AGP one. All eyes will now be riveted on the outcome of the Gharmurah-Jamira ZPC results, as it will decide which party is going to form the Hailakandi Zilla Parishad. In Anchalik Panchayats declared so far, the BJP has bagged 16 seats, the AIUDF with 14, INC with 8, AGP 2 and 21 independent candidates. In Gaon Panchayat President announced so far, the BJP has won 20 seats, independent candidates 20 seats, AIUDF 11, INC 8, AGP and NCP one each.
