Retired engineer decides to fight 2018 State polls

SHILLONG, Feb 15: Retired Chief Engineer of the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department, SK Sun, today announced that he will fight the 2018 assembly elections from Mawphlang Constituency. Currently this constituency is being represented by Congress legislator Kennedy Khyriem. The decision to take the plunge into the political are was taken at a public rally held at Madan Lyngktop, Mawphlang where public from various villages of Mawphlang Constituency attended. From the opinion gathered at the meeting the public wanted the former government servant to throw his hat into the ring as an independent candidate. However, leaders from Mawphlang constituency who organized the meeting made it clear that the decision to fight as an independent candidate or from a political party will be decided after thorough debate. “We have seen and also heard your desire to see me as your representative in the state assembly and I accept your offer to fight the 2018 assembly election”, Sun said while addressing the gathering. Sun retired as the Chief Engineer of the PHE on December 31, 2016. He served as the Chief Engineer of the PHE for five years. Sun also said that after he retired from his service many of his well wishers met him and tried to convince him to enter politics and fight the 2018 assembly election from Mawphlang Constituency. “Mawphlang Constituency, needs change, especially the farmers needs support since 80 percent of the electorates are peasants,” he said.
