Rising crime graphs reek of poor law & order in State since 2006

GUWAHATI, June 11: The crime rates continue to rise in Assam. Murders, rapes, kidpping, lootings, robberies, extortion, burglary etc., are on the rise with slight fluctuations at time.

According to sources in the Assam Police, up to March this year there as many as 254 murder cases. The number of rape cases during the period were 351. The number of kidpping cases till March this year in the State, according to the State police force, was 1,455. The period also reported, according to the police, 37 cases of looting, 210 cases of robbery, 247 cases of extortion, 1,038 cases of burglary, 2,894 cases of thefts, 412 cases of rioting and 774 cases of cheating. For a period of just three months, this is too much of crimes in the State. This does not augur well for a State that is trying to be a welfare state.

The graph of murder cases in the State since 2006 maintains almost a rising trend with some fluctuations at times. The number of murder cases in the State in 2006 was 1,247, which rose to 1,332 in 2007, to 1,405 in 2008, dropped to 1,323 in 2009, to 1223 in 2010, again rose to 1321 in 2011, to 1368 in 2012, to 1383 in 2013, to 1478 in 2014 and dropped to 1333 in 2015.

The situation in incidents of rape in the State is no better. The number of rape cases in the State in 2006 was 1203, which rose to 1310 in 2007, to 1419 in 2008, 1631 in 2009, to 1721 in 2010, slightly fell to 1707 in 2011, slightly rose to 1716 in 2012, rose to 1960 in 2013, to 2047 in 2014 and fell to 1852 in 2015.

The crime graph of kidpping cases in the State kept on rising continuously from 2006 to 2015. According to information received from the State police force, the number of kidpping cases in 2006 was 1818, which rose to 1893 in 2007, to 2219 in 2008, to 2719 in 2009, to 3250 in 2010, to 3785 in 2011, slightly fell to 3812 in 2012, to 4831 in 2013, to 5378 in 2014 and to 6103 in 2015.

The number of cases of lootings in the State  has been fluctuating from 2006 to 2015. According to sources in the State police, the number of looting cases in the State in 2006 was 332, which fell to 262 in 2007, and rose to 314 in 2008, fell to 251 in 2009, to 248 in 2010, rose to 310 in 2011, fell to 266 in 2012, to 249 in 2013, rose to 267 in 2014 and fell to 194 in 2015.

The number of robbery cases in the State also maintained a rising trend with fluctuations in three years. According to the State police sources, the number of robbery cases in the State in 2006 was 532, which fell to 464 in 2007, rose to 568 in 2008, to 680 in 2009, fell to 662 in 2010, rose to 841 in 2011, to 907 in 2012, to 933 in 2013, to 996 in 2014 and fell to 934 in 2015.

The number of extortion cases in the State kept on rising since 2006. According to information obtained from the State police force, in 2006 the number of extortion cases in the State was 460, which rose to 574 in 2007, to 626 in 2008, to 645 in 2009, to 909 in 2010, to 992 in 2011, to 1074 in 2012, to 1214 in 2013, to 1357 in 2014 and to 1361 in 2015.

The graph of the burglary cases in the State also kept on rising till 2014 and fell slightly in 2015. According to information obtained from the State police force, the number of burglary cases in the State in 2006 was 2420, which rose to 2625 in 2007, to 3117 in 2008, to 3139 in 2009, to 3281 in 2010, to 3340 in 2011, to 3825 in 2012, to 4305 in 2013, 4823 in 2014 and fell to 4739 in 2015.

The graph of theft cases in the State since 2006 also almost maintained a rising trend with slight fall in two years. According to the State police forces, the number of theft cases in the State in 2006 was 6904, which rose to 7516 in 2007, to 8146 in 2008, fell to 7644 in 2009, rose to 7860 in 2010, to 8350 in 2011, to 9394 in 2012, to 10692 in 2013, to 12198 in 2014 and slightly fell to 12024 in 2015.

The graph of rioting in the State since 2006 also kept on fluctuating. However, there had been an abysmal rise in the number of riots in the State in 2012 when as many as 5,077 riots were recorded. According to information received from the State police force, the number of riots that took place in the State in 2006 was 2241, which fell to 1940 in 2007, rose to 2103 in 2008, fell to 1828 in 2009, rose to 2183 in 2010, rose to 2347 in 2011, rose abysmally to 5,077 in 2012, fell drastically to 2444 in 2013, to 2490 in 2014 and fell to 2215 in 2015.

The incidents of cheating has also been rising almost continuously since 2006. The year 2015 recorded the highest number of cheating cases in the State. According to information obtained from the State police force, the number of cheating cases recorded in the State in 2006 was 741, which fell by two incidents to 739 in 2007, rose to 886 in 2008, to 1098 in 2009, to 1326 in 2010, to 1453 in 2011, to 1693 in 2012, to 2607 in 2013, to 2916 in 2014 and to 3781 in 2015.
