Shillong: May 14: The Rotary Club of Shillong will be organizing Sohra Marathon with the theme ‘Adventure in the rain’ on August 25.

The event also aims at breaking the Limca books of records. The Sohra (popularly known as Cherrapunjee) has the record of being the rainiest place on the earth.

The Rotary Club, along with the Department of Tourism and local youth from Saitsohpen, are organizing the 42- km run on August 25. “It’s not just a run but a chance to make every runner experience rain at the peak of the monsoon season,” stated James Perry, a member of the organizing committee.

Around 300 runners are expected to take part in the marathon, chairman of the organizing committee, Kailash Verma said. He further said: “This is expected to be a record breaking event as the officials of the Limca Book of records have agreed to judge the event.”

Verma said the event also aims at encouraging people of healthy lifestyles, promote running culture as well as attract visitors to Sohra.

“We want to create many sustainable projects for the village of Saitsohpen and its adjoining areas. Thus, the event is a means to organize funds for such projects,” Verma stated.

State Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Banteidor Lyndoh stated that the government would give all out support to the Sohra marathon.
