SHILLONG: A total of Rs 1.6 crore will be spent on conducting the by-polls to the South Tura and Ranikor Assembly constituencies.

According to an official of the State Election Department, it has earmarked Rs 80 lakh for the two constituencies going to polls. The department officials also informed that the State Government would bear the entire cost.

“The department has sought an amount of Rs 2 crore from the State Government for Ranikor and South Tura bye-elections,” the official said. Voting will take place on Thursday from 7 am to 5 pm and the counting of votes will be held on August 27. Meanwhile, Rs 80 lakh was also spent for the Ampati by-poll in Garo Hills held on May 28 this year. Congress candidate Miani D Shira won the by-election defeating NPP candidate Clement G Momin. She is the daughter of Congress leader and former Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma. The by-poll in Ampati was necessitated after Dr Sangma vacated the seat.

Dr Sangma had contested from Songsak and Ampati in the February 27 general assembly election. He retained Songsak.
