Sadou Asam Karmachari Parishad reaffirms stand against Citizenship Bill

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The Sadou Asam Karmachari Parishad (SAKP), which has over five lakh State Government employees as its members, has reaffirmed its pledge that under no circumstances it is going to accept the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

SAKP general secretary Fakhruddin Ahmed said on Thursday: “The Bill is going to violate the Assam Accord to grant Indian citizenship to foreigners on the basis of religions. Under no circumstances, it is acceptable to us. The Assam Accord is the outcome of the sacrifices of over 560 Assam Agitation martyrs, besides the torture of thousands. We’re not going to compromise with anything that’s set to nullify the Assam Accord. The Central Government assured us of implementing the Assam Accord. However, instead of doing that the Centre has proved that it is not at all sincere to implement the Accord.”

Ahmed further said: “We’re going to hold the next central executive meeting of the SAKP on January 20. We’re going to have a detailed discussion on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and draw the future course of action against the Bill.”
