TANGLA: The 30th biennial conference of the Assam State Electricity Workers' Union, affiliated to the Electricity Employees Federation of India, concluded in Tangla town in Udalguri district recently. The three day-long conference began from January 5 in Bordoloi Bhavan premises and was attended by nearly 200 members of the union from nooks and corners of the State. The first day of the convention witnessed a central executive meet. Speaking at the meet, president of the workers' union, Dipak Kumar Saha reiterated that union and revolution were two faces of same coin. Highlighting the issues plaguing the electricity employees, he exhorted them to fight for their legitimate rights.

The open session on the second day was inaugurated by retired Principal of Tangla College, senior journalist and advocate, Dr. Keshab Chanda Dutta. Speaking on the occasion, president of All Assam Nirman Shramik Union (AANSU) Udalguri chapter, Nurul Amin strongly criticized the government for drafting policies to hand over major government agencies to private sectors under Public-Private Partnership Model.

"The hopes and aspirations of the working class have been shattered as the saffron party has been adopting pro-corporate laws detrimental to the working class," he added. He further stated that it is quite astonishing to note that the present government had never paid heed to the greater conscience of the people and protests of the students' union and was adamant on every stand.

The souvenir Shakti Kantha was released by the Head of the Department of Assamese, Tangla College, Ghateswar Baruah. In the evening, noted singer Bipin Chawdang enthralled the gathering. The last day of the session concluded with a delegate session where the union took various resolutions and demanded scrapping of the Electricity Duty (Amendment) Bill, 2018, filling up vacant posts and regularizing the posts of master roll and contractual employees.
