Sale of Indian flags rising for Independence Day, Shillong

SHILLONG: As Independence Day is close approaching many local youths and residents of Shillong are seen buying Indian flags from local shops located at different parts of the city.

The Buzz in the capital city ahead of Independence Day is increasing compared with earlier years when the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) and other banned outfit in Meghalaya would call for ban debarring public participation in the I-Day celebration across the state of Meghalaya.

This scribe spoke a few shop owners selling Indian flags in an around Police Bazaar area to find out the number of sale of flags this year ahead of Independence Day compared with previous years.

A shop owner in Police Bazar informed this scribe that compared with previous years this year the sale of Indian flags has increased dramatically. “This is may be due to the present peace and harmony which is being experienced in the city and across the state,” he said adding that this is a positive for the state.

According to him, the sale of Indian flags in the city has increased 50 percent more when compared with last year.

Another shop owner, informed that the sale of flags has relatively increased as compared with last year. He said there is a need for the government to promote the sale of Indian flags ahead of Independence Day. When asked, he said, “The sale has increased and both the indigenous people and non-tribal people are buying the flags for Independence Day celebration.”
