SHILLONG, July 20: The convoy of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma was greeted with slogans of “We want ILP” by members of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) as the former arrived at Mawlai Mawtawar for iuguration of Mawlai C&RD block on Thursday.

The HYC members also carried with them placards that read “We demand strong laws to protect from the silent invasion of influx”, “Implement ILP in Meghalaya”, “Mr Chief Minister thank you for the Mawlai C&RD block but we want more”, “We want ILP and stronger laws”, etc.

Speaking to reporters after the brief protest, HYC Mawlai circle president Donboklang Kharlyngdoh said, “We are grateful that the Chief Minister has helped realise the dream of the people of Mawlai by creating the C&RD block here and another one at Mawpat, but we also want the government to take serious notes of our demands placed before it.”

He reiterated that the HYC will continue to fight for its demand to implement ILP in the State, one of the 13-point charter of demands submitted to the government that also includes resolving the border row with Assam.

According to him, the Meghalaya Residents Safety & Security Act has no teeth to tackle the problem of influx in the state.

The organization further invited the Chief Minister and his Cabinet of Ministers for discussion on the issue of influx and ILP on 22nd July at the Khasi tiol Dorbar Hall, Mawkhar.

“We have invited the government to discuss the issue, but till date we are yet to receive a response from the government,” he said adding that the HYC will also invite those Ministers who are intending to quit the Congress to take part in the discussion on the contentious issue of ILP.
