Sarkar, Shahid earn first call in Bangladesh Test squad

Dhaka, April 25: Bangladesh has called up newcomers Soumya Sarkar, Mohammad Shahid and Liton Kumar Das for the first Test against Pakistan.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced a 14-member squad with the three in line to make their Test debut. The hosts will face the tourists in the first of the two-match series on April 28 at the Sheikh Abu ser Stadium in Khul, reports bdnews24.com.

Das was in the Twenty20 Intertiol squad on Friday but did not play while fast bowler Shahid has been added as an extra weapon in the pace arsel.

Sarkar has been rewarded with a Test call for his brilliant batting in the One-Day Intertiol (ODI) series, which the hosts won 3-0. The left-handed opener hit his maiden ton in the last match of the series.

The squad: Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Liton Kumar Das, Mominul Haque, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim (captain), Mahmudullah, Shuvagata Hom Chowdhury, Soumya Sarkar, Taijul Islam, Jubair Hossain, Shahadat Hossain, Rubel Hossain and Mohammad Shahid.

Meanwhile Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasi on Saturday announced that flats and cars along with prize money will be given to the tiol cricket team for its brilliant performance in the World Cup and home series against Pakistan.

Bangladesh’s clinical 3-0 One-Day Intertiol (ODI) series sweep and maiden T20 Intertiol win against Pakistan followed their most successful campaign in the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand where they reached the quarter-fils, reports bdnews24.com.

The prime minister congratulated the team during a reception at the Gabhaban, her official residence. During the ceremony, BCB President zmul Hassan gave an account of money received from the Intertiol Cricket Council (ICC) after Bangladesh progressed to the quarter-fils of the World Cup.

The prime minister announced additiol rewards. She said the team had received 10 million taka as winning bonus in the World Cup and 30 million taka more from ICC. Captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and company would receive another 12.3 million taka from the BCB.

The Bangladesh team will get another 10 million taka for their inspiring performance in the World Cup and another 10 million taka for the limited-overs series sweep against Pakistan.

The government would also provide cars and accommodation to the tiol team players, the prime minister said. She joined the team and board officials for lunch after the reception. (IANS)
