ITANAGAR: In view of 72nd Independence Day celebration at IG Park on August 15, the police department has beefed up security in and around capital complex.

City Police Chief (SP) M Harsha Vardhan in an interaction with this daily told that elaborate security has been beefed up all around the capital complex. Check nakas have been alerted and additional security personnel have been posted to all check points leading towards the capital complex.

As the Parade contingents are busy with practice at IG Park, Capital Police has stepped up its activity ahead of Independence Day. Checking at various Nakas and Check gates has become more rigorous. Police has also increased the frequency of Hotel and guest house checking in order to track down or deter anti social elements. Simultaneous patrolling at sensitive locations from Banderdewa to Holongi is being conducted on daily basis. Instances of public consuming alcohol at public places like IG Park have been minimized as a result of such regular drives earlier.

SP Harsha Vardhan said, “Increase in police presence will be seen in the run up to Independence Day with surprise naka checking at random times and places.” He also said police are making elaborate arrangements to ensure peaceful and smooth conduct of state level celebration program on Independence Day.

On the issue of ILP checking, he said it continues on a daily basis. “In the last 10 days, nearly 600 ILP violators have been detected and deployed. This is in addition to the people who are not allowed entry at Check gates for not possessing valid ILP.” Harsha Vardhan cautioned the various groups against taking the law into their own hands. He asked to share information with the police besides taking law to their own hand on the illegal migrants. Only police and magistrates can conduct ILP checking, he clarified.
