‘Selfie With Sapling’ Marks World Environment Day in Itanagar

ITANAGAR: The World Environment Day’ was observed by the staff and officers of the Regional Outreach Bureau (ROB) Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) at its office-cum- residential complex at Senki View here on Wednesday.

In response to the people’s campaign ‘Selfie with Sapling’ launched by Union Environment Minister, Prakash Javadekar urging all to join and plant a sapling and post the selfie with the sapling on social media, Director of Arunachal Pradesh Region Dr Keshavmurthy led the campaign by planting more than 100 saplings of various types of plants in the campus.

Keshavmurthy said that ‘Jan Bhagidari’ is integral towards tackling the environmental issues and environment protection has to be a people’s movement throughout the year to save the public all over the world.

He said that air pollution is the theme of this year’s ‘World Population Day’ as it has implications cutting across continents.

Keshavmurthy identified Agriculture, Transport and Industries as the main causes of air pollution leading to the biggest environmental health risk of our time.

“Airborne pollutants are responsible for about one-third of deaths from stroke, chronic respiratory disease, and lung cancer, as well as one quarter of deaths from heart attack,” he said, adding that air pollution is also fundamentally altering our climate, with profound impacts on the health of the planet.
