Semir on plea bargaining held

Tezpur, March 24: District Legal Services Authority Sonitpur, Tezpur organized a semir on plea bargaining among judicial officers. It was held at Lok-Adalat Hall.
The semir was iugurated by Darak Ullah, Additiol District and Session Judge, Sonitpur, in presence of Debashish Saikia, CJM, Tezpur, Mridu Chanda Bordoloi, secretary, DLSA, Sonitpur, and Sumit Bhuyan, SDJM, Tezpur.
Delivering the key note address, Darak Ullah said that plea bargaining was an opportunity for an accused person to seek a concession for charge or sentence if he pleaded guilty. Procedure for plea bargaining starts in the pre-trial stage itself. The victim, the prosecutor, the accused and all work towards disposition of the case by mutual agreement under the court’s supervision. Ullah also added that plea bargain could not be accepted in offence against women, against minors below 14 years and habitual offenders.
Attending the semir, Mridu Chanda Bordoloi, said that plea bargaining had several benefits. The under trial accused will be greatly benefited by this modern alterte dispute redressal system, which will also save time and money of the accused and eble speedy disposal of cases.
