GUWAHATI, June 20: The cause of the people of Assam opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 spearheaded by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and other organizations in the State, including the AGP, has got the support of a Marathi newspaper – Saamana – which is the mouthpiece of the Shiva Sena and being edited by none other than Uddhav Thackeray.

In the editorial of the latest edition of the Marathi newspaper, its editor Uddhav Thackeray, who happens to be the president of the Shiv Sena, said: “The Shiva Sena is going to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in both Houses of Parliament.”

Giving details of the Assam Agitation and the sacrifices made by 855 martyrs in the State for the interests of the indigenous people of the State, the editorial has said that the Shiva Sena is going to side with any party fighting for the cause of the indigenous people on any State. “We’re always with the indigenous people and local sentiment,” the editorial said. It was on June 16 an AGP team led by party president Atul Bora met Uddhav Thackeray in Mumbai and sought support from the Shiva in their tirade against the anti-national Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. In his reply, Thackeray assured the AGP leaders of his unstinted support to its agitation against the Bill. The Shiv Sena leader further told the AGP that the MPs of his party would oppose the Bill in both Houses of Parliament.
