FROM A REPORTER

SHILLONG, Oct 21: As a setback for the Congress party in Meghalaya, leaders of different area Congress committee, Mawsynram Block, in a meeting held today has taken an unimous decision to declare themselves as suspended party workers since the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) had suspended the KHADC CEM and Congress legislator PN Syiem for anti-party activities for a period of 3 years.

The Congress party has also suffered a major setback after the resigtion of five other Congress MDCs who are supporting the KHADC CEM.

It may be reminded that the State Congress recently dissolved the Mawsynram and the Mawkynriew block Congress committees represented by PN Syiem and Banteidor Lyngdoh, respectively, following the former’s suspension and elected Khelorsing Kharior as the new president of the Mawsynram Block Committee and ER Thangkhiew as president of the Mawkynriew Block Congress Committee.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Banraplang Hynniewta, assistant general secretary, Mawsynram Block Congress said, “We are in shock over the sudden suspension of our local MLA PN Syiem by the MPCC without even sending any show cause notice.”

He added, “The Congress party in the State has reiterated that it is a disciplined partly, but in this case they have not followed the party rules and this clearly shows that the MPCC is using a dictatorial attitude by dissolving the Mawsynram Block Congress Committee without prior discussion with various block office bearers.”

The Mawsynram Block Congress has also condemned the actions of the MPCC for suspending the KHADC chief without first discussing it with various the Mawsynram Block members. He said that in future if Syiem takes any decision they will gladly support his decision and follow him.

The Congress party workers present in the meeting were from Sawsymper, Mawsynram, Lawbah, Syntein, Dangar, Phlang Mawsympat, Border Area, etc.

When asked if any decision was taken during the meeting to contest the 2018 assembly election from a different party or as an Independent candidate keeping in mind the 3 years suspension imposed by the MPCC, Syiem replied in the negative but however said that he does not know what the future course of action might be.
