Seven corpses bob up from B'putra bed!

GUWAHATI, April 17: In what makes one’s hair stand on end, as many as seven human bodies were seen to have bobbed up from the bed of the Brahmaputra near Bhootnath crematorium in Guwahati. The bodies came to sight on Tuesday – making everybody concerned to be equipped with a reply.

Whom the seven bodies are of? Where the bodies came from? What kind of a shroud has been keeping such a mystery covered all throughout? Has anything gone seriously wrong? Many such questions concerning the seven bodies seek right responses.

There are some responses to the queries from some people who are associated with the disposal of bodies, someway of the other. Among the whole lot of responses to the queries, the one with maximum probability is – the bodies are unclaimed ones that have to be buried so that they can be dug out when needed.

If this response is taken for granted, how come the bodies come out from the river bed? The officer in-charge of Bharalumukh police station, Moni Kanta Chamua wants to say that all these are unclaimed bodies which were buried. According to Chamua, more such bodies may bob up from the river bed with the rise in the water level of the river.

Throwing more light on the issue, GLP Social Circle site in-charge Hemen Kalita says that space is a scare for disposal of unclaimed bodies at Bhootnath. “Three/four such unclaimed bodies keep coming to the crematorium for burial from all over Guwahati. Due to problem of space, such bodies are buried on the river bed. Much of the river bed is laid bare during the dry season. With the increase in water level, the sand above the bodies might have been washed away by the water current,” Kalita said.

GMC chandal (one who disposes of corpses) Jagadish Basfor said: “I’m the lone chandal left in this crematorium. Three other posts of chandal have been lying vacant. The GMC authority has been informed of these vacancies, but to little avail.  The other problem is scarcity of space for the burial of unclaimed corpses. Around 50 such unclaimed bodies come to the crematorium for burial every month. The police come with sweepers and bury the bodies in a shoddy way. The burial ground should be dug up to waist deep to lay the bodies to rest. They, however, don’t dig the ground that much, leading the bodies bobbing up when the sand covering them is washed away by the water current. Sometimes dog and jackals feed on such bodies even when the sand bank of the river isn’t under water.”

A section of people, on the other hand, wants to say that a section of occultists (tantric) rushes to Bhootnath to take heads of unclaimed bodies that are buried in a shoddy way.  What goes against the much-hyped beautification of the Brahmaputra front in Guwahati is – as to how the police burry unclaimed bodies in the river bed. Who has given this permission?
