Itanagar: The number of districts in Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday swells up to 23 with the formal inauguration of Shi Yomi district by Chief Minister Pema Khandu in presence of Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju.

Two more districts would be formally inaugurated in the state within this week taking the total to 25.

Following the inauguration, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Mechuka read out the notification for creation of Shi Yomi district which was followed by ceremonial flag handover to the deputy commissioner M Dirchi and superintendent of police G Dajangju of the newly created district by state Chief Secretary Satya Gopal and DGP S B K Singh respectively, an official communiqué informed.

“The district, consisting four circles namely Mechuka, Pidi, Tato and Monigong was carved out of West Siang district was a long felt demand which the subsequent state government failed to fulfill it,” Khandu said while addressing the gathering.

Owing to its large geographical area, inaccessible terrains and the district headquarters Aalo being far from these four circles, the state assembly gave its assent to the creation of the new district, the chief minister informed.

Congratulating the people of the new district, Khandu said the task of building the new district has began and urged all the local communities - Memba, Adi and Tagin to think in one line and walk together to build a prosperous and developed district.

Thanking the people for donating land for government establishments for free, the chief minister urged to set priorities right as the state government cannot afford lavish spending.

He promised that in the coming budget session, provision for funds for the development of infrastructure would be kept.

For the development of crucial infrastructure required for immediate functioning of the district headquarters, the chief minister assured to sanction the required funds.

The state Assembly on August 29 this year passed a bill for the creation of three new districts - Pakke-Kesang, Lepa Rada and Shi Yomi - in the state.

The Pakke-Kessang district has been carved out of East Kameng district with five administrative units namely Pakke-Kessang, Seijosa, Pijiriang, Passa Valley and Dissing Passo with district headquarters at Lemmi.

The other district Lepa Rada was created by bifurcating the Lower Siang district with headquarters at Basar with four administrative units – Tirbin, Basar, Daring and Sago.
