SHILLONG: Hundreds of residents from Hima Sohiong on Monday gathered inside the premises of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) demanding the immediate removal of the Lyngdoh (traditional head) Banshemlang Thabah alleging misuse of power.

A delegation of the Synjuk ki Sordar Shnong Khrang Pyllung (SSSKP) also met with the KHADC CEM HS Shylla to discuss the matter with him and request the removal of the Lyngdoh at the earliest, failing which they might even consider staging a hunger strike at KHADC.

The Synjuk has also issued a one-week deadline to the Executive Committee of the district council to remove the Lyngdoh. The residents of Hima Sohiong were also seen carrying placards and black flags while shouting slogans demanding the removal of Thabah as ‘Lyngdoh’.

Leaders of the Synjuk, while speaking to reporters after meeting with the KHADC Chief informed that the council has sought sometime from them concerning this issue since the district council session will begin on Tuesday.

“The Lyngdoh of Hima Sohiong had misused his power because at present Khrang village which falls under the Hima has eleven sordars with around five hundred household,” they said.

The Synjuk leaders said that this has created many confusion and problems for the people, especially during times of traditional rituals, cleaning drive etc.

“Whenever there is a land dispute between the residents, one Sordar will issue a directive while another Sordar will issue his own directives and this creates problem amongst the people,” they said.
