Shillong Geophysical Research Centre iugurated

SHILLONG, Jan 18: The First ever Indian Institute of Geophysical (IIG) in the North East region christened as the Shillong Geophysical Research Centre was today officially iugurated at Three and Half Miles, Upper Shillong by Union Minister Dept. of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences.

Addressing the occasion Chief Guest Dr. Harsh Vardhan Union Minister Dept. of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, said, “The reason for bringing this centre here is because of what happened in the past and the second this is due to our Prime Minister Nerendra Modi who is passiote to understand the issues and problems of the people and to find solutions to those problems.”

He observed that the Prime Minister in every cabinet meeting would make references directly or indirectly to his cabinet colleagues are doing for the Northeastern states and reviews things at a persol level.

According to him, Shillong is a very important place right form pre-independence since even if as of today it’s not the capital of Assam it’s the capital of Meghalaya.

The Union Minister also lauded Late Captain Clifford K Nongrum for his brave actions during the Kargil war while also describing him as a hero of the tion.

Meanwhile, Dr DS Ramesh Director of IIG said, “It is indeed a historic moment in the 190 years of IIG existence and we are proud to celebrate our third regiol centre.”

He informed that the Union Minister has sanctioned special; grants worth Rs. 500 Lakhs during this fincial year towards the establishment of the regiol centre.

He said the fact that the lithosphere, atmosphere and ionospheres are coupled offers an opportunity to study manifestation of the seismic waves following an earthquake.
