SHILLONG, Sept 7: A candlelight vigil in memory of slain senior jourlist Gauri Lankesh was held in Police Bazar by Shillong Press Club (SPC) and Meghalaya Electronic Media Association (MEMA) on Thursday evening.

The vigil was attended by members of the press fraternity, social groups, general public, members of different political parties, including MLAs and MDCs.

Lankesh, founding editor of Lankesh Patrike, was assassited outside her house by unidentified men in Bangalore.

The media fraternity of the State Capital has condemned the brutal assassition of the senior jourlist.

Speaking to reporters, SPC president David Laitphlang said, “Another life of a jourlist has been forcibly taken by unknown people and we are here to demand justice and for adequate protection for jourlist.”

“Even if we express our opinions, there is a possibility that we end up losing our lives. It is said that media is the fourth pillar of democracy, yet we are being forcefully tried to be silenced. This is ucceptable,” he said.

Laitphlang urged the investigating agency to hunt down the culprits and punish them as per the law.

“In the past four years, lives of around six jourlists have been lost, which have affected their families,” he said.
