Shillong to host Tomato Festival

SHILLONG, May 19: The city is all set to host the first ever Tomato festival at Water Sports Complex, Orchid Lake Resort, Umiam on May 21. The festival better known as “La Tomati” is usually being held in a small town called Buñol located in Valencia, Spain.

“We hope that with the festival coming to Shillong it will generate and promote more tourism to the state and the local youths will also have a platform to showcase their talents as there will also be live preformances in the festival,” Anthony Lyngdoh, publicity secretary of Amazing Colours of India (ACI) told newsmen here on Thursday.   

He informed that a band of differently abled children from Bethany Society will perform and a live performance by Bollywood hip-hop singer Hard Kaur.

Speaking on the event, he said, “There will not be wastage of tomatoes as we will use tomatoes discarded by the sellers from the markets and we have collaborated with Directorate of Horticulture and Khasi Jaintia Vegetable Sellers Association for promotion of their produce.”
