RAJEN GOHAIN’S LANGUAGE JIBE

SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

Silchar, Dec 14: Silchar District Congress Committee at an emergent meeting held in Indira Bhawan here today decided to call Cachar bandh on Friday. According to Partha Ranjan Chakraborty, general secretary, and chairman, media and communication cell, said the shut down has been called in protest against the most objectioble statement of Rajen Gohain, BJP MP and Union Minister of State for Railways, last Monday. His statement has been most disparaging, describing the historic language movement of 1961 as a blunder. This has not only hurt the sentiments and feelings of the Bengalis but also undermined the sacrifices of the martyrs of the language movement of 1961.

Despite their best efforts to bring it to the notice of the local BJP leaders and the committee, there has been no response from them. This is quite intriguing, Chakraborty commented. In protest against such statement of Rajen Gohain, casting a slur on the 11 martyrs, Silchar District Congress Committee has decided to call 12 hour all out bandh of Cachar. The bandh is it start from 5 AM and end at 5 PM. Essential services like health, water, milk, newspapers, fire brigade, vehicles on examition duties as well as on marriages are exempted from the purview of the shut down.

Silchar District Congress Committee is aware of the difficulties to be faced by daily wage earners as well as working class people for which it expresses its deep regret. Chakraborty reminds it is against the most humiliating exercise of Rajen Gohain to show disrespect to Bengali language martyrs and the Bengali community in general that the bandh has been called. In the meantime, Barak Upatkya Banga Sahitya O Sanskriti Sammelan as well as all political and non political organizations including different transport owners’ associations have decided to extend their support to the cause. Chakraborty has called upon people in general to support the bandh and observe it in a peaceful manner.
