SILCHAR, Dec 10: Leaders, members and workers of Silchar Town Congress Committee staged protest demonstration before the Municipal Board here today on various issues of development. Leaders and supporters raised slogans against the Board and targeted the chairman, Niharendra rayan Thakur, for its inefficiency in maging the civic services. Later they submitted a memorandum to the chairman, demanding measures to remove the deficiencies.

Sanjeev Roy who led the demonstration besides raising issues on development demanded detailed information on them. One of the issues raised was about the present status of laying of concrete block pavement of roads and lanes of this town for which an estimated amount of Rs.21.33 crore has been sanctioned at the initiative of MP Sushmita Dev. He also wanted to know about the care and medical treatment of a cart puller Kabir Ranjan Das who sustained grievous injuries in his legs after being hit by a municipal vehicle. In fact, his both legs had to be amputated.

The attention of the chairman has also been drawn to the steps by the Central Government to declare Silchar as a ‘smart city’. Since, he attended a meeting in New Delhi with papers and documents in support of the declaration, what are the lapses for excluding the me of this town under the Mission? A full report on it should be made public, the memorandum stressed. Another important matter was in respect of solid waste magement project and steps taken by the Board in this regard for implementation.

During rains, many areas of this town get water-logged. Subhash gar is one such area for which mega pump set was purchased during the previous Board for installation. Nothing has been done by this Board during the last rainy season. Why is the pump set not being installed? In one of his election promises during the civic polls, it was declared that the betterment fee would be reduced by 50%, but nothing is heard about it.

The Goldighi municipal market complex run and maged by the Board is facing lot of problems as the lift, escalator, AC machine, transformer and various other machinery are not in working condition for days. The business community of the complex complain that these are not being maintained properly, affecting their day to day business. The present BJP run Board promised to ensure press/media persons in all the board meetings, but this has not been kept. What is the reason for it?
